In an earlier blog, I reported that in 2014 Google announced that as part of page ranking for SEO (search engine optimization) it would begin to take into consideration whether or not a website is protected by an SSL certificate (creating the HTTPS URL) when determining a site’s page ranking. At that time Google penalized websites without the HTTPS designation (meaning an SSL certificate has been installed) with a percentage drop in ranking, starting at 1%. We were all told at that time that Google would increase the importance of installing an SSL certificate over time and they have. Now they are taking a stronger stance. Not only will a website lose page ranking for not being secured, but,according to this security blog from Google, beginning in January 2017 Google will “…mark HTTP pages that collect passwords or credit cards as non-secure, as part of a long-term plan to mark all HTTP sites as non-secure.”

WordPress, too, is jumping on the SSL bandwagon. The giant Content Management System platform is Moving Toward SSL by taking actions that are leading up to requiring hosting companies to provide SSL certificates to users by default. The plan is to initially promote only those hosting partners who already provide certificates to users’s accounts. Later they intend to “…assess which features…would benefit the most from SSL and make them only enabled when SSL is there.”
