I ran across this handy infographic while playing around on Pinterest and I wanted to share it with you. For me design is mostly instinctual, I “know” when it looks right, but it is very important for me to keep the hierarchy of vision in mind and be purposeful in my design. We design websites to be beautiful, but we also design them to catch users’ eyes and to market to them. Obviously doing both is key because no one likes a discordant and ugly website. All of this can be taken into consideration for print materials too, so if you’re in the digital or print designing profession, this is a very handy reminder. I printed it out to hang where I can see it. Purposeful design means that you’ve thought about it, not just aesthetically but how it supports your message and speaks to your audience. Even if you’re not the person designing your website, ad or other marketing materials, it’s a good thing to keep in mind and check against.

Happy designing!
